Chai Masala Recipes
Perhaps it is a bit rigid to even think of Chai masala "recipes" since individual taste and creativity are what makes this drink so much fun. But, there are few key ingredients, and there is a basic method.
The Ingredients
TEA Black or other strong tea is best as your "base" flavor; SWEETENER This can be various sugars, molasses, honey or another sweetener of your choice; MILK Some may prefer something a bit more fattening like cream or condensed milk; SPICES - Your choice
The Basic Method
Chai can be prepared in many ways, but a typical sequence might include boiling the chai masala spice mixture with the sweetener, adding tea and milk and bringing back to a boil, and then allowing the tea mixture to steep for several minutes. (Source: Wikipedia)
Masala Chai
Makes Six Cups 4 crushed cloves 2 cardamom pods 2 cinnamon sticks, crushed 4 cups water Pinch ground black pepper 3/4 cup milk 3 tablespoons Clover Honey 3 tablespoons Black tea
Place crushed spices in water and bring to boil. Let steep for 5 minutes. Add the milk and honey and bring to a boil. Remove from heat and add tea. Stir and serve.
Spiced Chai
Makes Six Cups 3 cups water 2 sticks cinnamon crushed 8 crushed cardamom pods 8 crushed cloves 1 cup milk 6 teaspoons turbinate sugar 3 teaspoons any basic black tea or black tea mix
Add spices to water and boil. Then simmer for 10 minutes. Add the milk and sugar. While still at simmer add tea. Strain and serve.
